FMEAs have been used in the automotive industry for years to assure a quality product. Now mandated by most OEMs, the use of FMEAs has become a strategic necessity for suppliers who hope to maintain contracts while limiting defects. In 2018 alone, 47 million cars were recalled in the U.S. costing companies billions in extra costs. For small manufacturers, these costs could put the safety of their businesses at risk.
In June 2019, an update to the AIAG 4th Edition FMEA was released – known as the AIAG-VDA-FMEA Methodology – giving manufacturers a NEW set of requirements to adhere to, providing a common approach for both the North American and European markets while setting higher standards for quality than ever before.
