Economic Development Power Lunch: Talent Attraction, Retention & Training
Event Sponsors
Join the GBACOC and Ann Arbor SPARK for this monthly luncheon. This month we are discussing the important issue of attracting, training and retaining talent in Michigan. We are pleased to have Roger Curtis, Director of the Michigan Department of Talent & Economic Development, as our keynote speaker. It's time for a revolution. Michigan's economic revival has been nothing short of remarkable. However, there is one thing that is needed to ensure continued economic prosperity for the state, and that's a robust talent pipeline ready to fill the growing number of high-demand, high-wage careers of today and tomorrow.
By 2024, there will be more than 811,000 high-demand, high-wage career openings, equating to nearly $50 billion in potential earnings left on the table for Michiganders. The Marshall Plan for Talent is a transformational partnership between educators, employers and other stakeholders to transform Michigan's talent pipeline and redesign the ways we invest, develop and attract talent in our state. It inspires and challenges government, educators, employers and parents to work more closely and recognize that Michigan's bright future depends on their collaboration.
It's clear, the state that best closes the talent gap will have a competitive advantage over others when companies look at places to locate and expand. Together, we can ensure Michigan will be that state.
Appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder in November 2016, Roger Curtis oversees efforts to ensure that Michigan can efficiently and effectively develop, administer and coordinate Michigan's economic, housing and talent development programs. Mr. Curtis works with state Superintendent Brian Whiston to lead the Michigan Career Pathways Alliance, which is focused on ensuring students have improved access to career exploration and trainings and schools getting more support. He sits on the board of the Michigan Strategic Fund, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Michigan Land Bank. Mr. Curtis formerly served on the Michigan Tourism Commission.
The Economic Development Power Series is designed to bring to our community updates on economic and political issues trending locally, statewide and at the national level. We feature "movers and shakers" in business and government who provide insight into leadership perspectives and corporate impact on our local business climate. Thanks to Accident Fund and Michigan Works! Southeast for generously sponsoring this month's event. Our thanks as well to Grace & Porta Benefits for their Executive Sponsorship of this year's series.
